Fed-Up Granite Staters Rally Against NH Republicans' Broken Promises and Budget Cuts
Community members demand accountability, fighting to protect key services relief from skyrocketing cost of living
CONCORD – On Tuesday night, hundreds Granite Staters gathered on Tuesday evening at the State House Plaza for a powerful rally to “Fight for Our Future,” calling out elected officials for failing to stand up for working families amid rising costs and legislative decisions that favor the wealthy and well-connected.
The rally, organized by the “Fight for Our Future” coalition, featured speakers directly impacted by cuts in the state budget and other harmful legislation passed during the session. With the final votes of the legislative session imminent, everyday Granite Staters addressing those in attendance sent a clear message: they are fed up with broken promises — and ready to hold their leaders accountable.
“We're watching a whole generation of good, hardworking people get priced out of the communities they were raised in. Teachers, nurses, construction workers, grocery clerks--the people who keep our economy running--can't afford to live in the places they serve,” said Rosie Emrich of Hooksett. “And if you do manage to hang on to housing, guess what? The system hits you again. New Hampshire has some of the highest property taxes in the country--because the state refuses to fund our public schools fairly.”
“As the mother of autistic children, I am terrified that proposed changes to Medicaid will leave my children uninsured. Medicaid has enabled my children to access speech and occupational therapy services. These services have taught my children how to self-regulate and communicate. Is this going to go away?” asked Jenny Belmont-Earl of Barrington. “The state I love is being held captive by legislators who are not listening to their constituents. The wishes of the overwhelming majority of parents in the Granite State are being ignored. Our children’s right to an education, healthcare and affordable inclusive childcare are at stake.”
“Medicaid is supposed to be a safety net for Granite Staters and adding premiums only creates an additional barrier to accessing much-needed healthcare,” said Michelle Lawrence, who lives with a rare chronic cancer. “With the rising cost of living already high, how are folks supposed to come up with insurance premiums when they qualify for Medicaid because they don’t make enough in the first place? Balancing the budget on the back of those who have the least, who ar disabled, children, your neighbors, and the elderly, is a lazy, shameful, heartless move.”
Speakers also included Pastor Jon Hopkins of Concordia Lutheran Church in Concord, UNH student Ty Wyman, and school board member Liz Cote of Franklin who stood in solidarity with New Hampshire families demanding a better budget for working families that lower costs, supports critical public services, and restores trust in government that politicians at the State House have squandered with irresponsible and radical governance.
“Fight for Our Future” is a coalition of hardworking Granite Staters who are fed up with excuses, backroom deals, and broken promises. We’re done watching politicians stand by while our families get crushed under the weight of rising costs. We deserve a future where hard work pays off, families can put down roots, and everyone has the opportunity to succeed. And if our leaders won’t fight for us, we’ll fight back. Because New Hampshire deserves better– and we’re done waiting.
